The Cancer Care Navigator Program began in 2003 as a partnership between the Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition and Georgia Highlands College. At that time participants were invited to attend 6 live sessions and complete the necessary work associated with that program. Soon after, it was made into an independent study program with a set of disks and workbooks.
Nurse Navigators are patient educators and advocates, care coordinators, system navigators, and community ambassadors on a mission to improve the cancer experience for each patient. The Nurse Navigators are a support system for the patient and his/her family at a critical time — after diagnosis and through treatment — and serve as a gateway to health services. Although navigators are new to the healthcare industry, programs have been started in hospitals across the United States.
At this time, the Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition has partnered with Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center in order to update the program and make it fully online. The website contains the educational modules, materials, and exams necessary for the completion of the program. If at anytime you need assistance navigating this website, please call Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center at 706.235.0776 ext. 210
